The preparations for the 2017 FINA World Championships have reached an important milestone, as nearly 400 volunteers gathered together in the hall of the corporation responsible for the organizing of the WCH almost a year before the opening ceremony of the event.
The preparations for the 2017 FINA World Championships have reached an important milestone, as nearly 400 volunteers gathered together in the hall of the corporation responsible for the organizing of the WCH almost a year before the opening ceremony of the event. They were welcomed by Tamás Gyárfás, co-charmain of the Organizing Committee of the WCH, vice-president of FINA, president of the Hungarian Swimming Federation, Lajos Mocsai, rector of University of Physical Education (Budapest), Dr Csaba Sós, vice-president of the Hungarian Swimming Federation, docent of University of Physical Education, Dr András Hargitay, head coach of the Hungarian swimming team, Éva Szántó, managing director of Bp2017 Nonprofit Ltd. and Dr Szilvia Perényi, operations manager of the Volunteers Program.
This was the first big meeting for the volunteers, who will have an important role in many different areas in organizing the WCH. Their coaching is starting soon, with contribution of the University of Physical Education.
Tamás Gyárfás stressed that everyone has to work unified in order to have a really successful world championships.
„The volunteers take a very important role in the organization” – he added.
Lajos Mocsai said the volunteers can contribute to the WCH with their skills, knowledge of languages and cultural behaviour.
„Hungarian creativity and problem solving can help a lot, and we should not forget that this WCH can be a springboard towards organizing the olympic games.”
Dr Csaba Sós said this WCH will be a very different event compared to those which have been held in Hungary before. He also pointed out, that young and old, woman and man should co-operate in every segment of the world championships.
Dr András Hargitay is convinced the volunteers have to do their job with heart and soul, beacause „…an airplane can not take half to the air either.” He wishes them to see the Hungarian athletes on the podium as many times as possible, so that they can feel they are also part of their success.
Éva Szántó said there are a couple of beautiful scenes related to the WCH, such as the Városliget, where the synchronized swimming events will be held, the Batthyány Square (high diving) or Balatonfüred by the lake Balaton (open water swimming).
„Hard work is ahead of everyone, but it will also be a fantastic experience in a fantastic sports event.”
Dr Szilvia Perényi expressed her delight that more than 1500 people have already registered in a one-month period for the volunteer program.
Representing the athletes, synchronized swimmer Julia Kiss, who is also co-worker of the Bp2017 Nonprofit Ltd, said thank you for all those who have taken part in former sports events in Hungary as volunteers.
„I encourage everyone to join the volunteer team” – she added.
In view of the huge interest some 3500 volunteers are expected to help the successful organization of the FINA World Championships and the FINA Masters WCH, not only Hungarians, but people from all over the world.
