·   The solo technical routine will see a new winner as three-time gold medallist Natalia Ishchenko (RUS) and two-time gold medallist Svetlana Romashina (RUS) will not compete.

·   Instead, Svetlana Kolesnichenko (RUS) will fly the flag for Russia. Kolesnichenko has already claimed 12 gold medals in synchronised swimming at the world championships, but never in an individual event.

·   Kolesnichenko (12) is two gold medals shy of joining Anastasia Davydova (RUS, 14) in third place on the all-time gold medal ranking in Synchro. Only Romashina (22) and Ishchenko (20) have more.

·   Kolesnichenko has never claimed a medal of any other colour at the world championships.

·   Spain's Ona Carbonell (ESP) can become the first non-Russian swimmer to win the solo technical routine.

·   Carbonell took home the bronze and silver medal in this event in 2013 and 2015 respectively. She can join Natalia Ishchenko (G3) on a record three medals in the solo technical routine.

·   Carbonell has won 20 medals at the world championships, including one gold medal, as she won the free combination in 2009 with the Spanish team.

·   Chinese swimmers claimed a medal in this event at the last three world championships. Huang Xuechen (CHN) took home the silver in 2011 and 2013 and Sun Wenyan (CHN) claimed the bronze medal in 2015. In 2009, Chinese swimmers did not participate in this event.

·   Apart from Russia, Spain and China, only Canada and Japan ever claimed a medal in this event at the world championships. Saho Harada (JPN) took home the bronze medal for Japan in 2007 and Marie-Pier Boudreau-Gagnon (CAN) claimed bronze for Canada in 2009.
