After the first rounds of the 17th FINA World Championship the Hungarian, the American, the Greek and the Italian national team had the opportunity to rest for a day after finishing first in their group respectively. The hosting country’s team couldn’t praise their fans enough as the cheering Hungarian crowd made the matches an unforgettable experience for the girls.

Attila Bíró’s team, the olympic 4th and European Champion Hungarian national team has beaten Japan, France and the Netherlands in the first rounds. Therefore the girls got amongst the top eight teams at the World Championship, meaning they will surely reach up further than in Kazan two years ago when they finished 9th.

The team will face off Canada for the next time to get into the top four. The girls have three days to rest. On the first one they talked to the press at a press conference and later on they gave clay pigeon shooting a try.

They all spoke enthusiastically about the unlimited love they got from the audience:

„Our fans give us a lot. The first moment when we appear at the pool and they shout’s impossible to describe what a good feeling it is. When we celebrate victory together, I’m sure it’s an amazing experience for them, too.” – said Edina Gangl about the atmosphere in the Hajós Alfréd Swimming Complex.

According to Gabriella Szücs, the team has the key to make it to the top four which lies in the cohesion within the team:

„I may say on behalf of the whole team that our unity is outstanding. It was mostly visible during the match against the Netherlands, but it’s always there anyway. We had our training in a good atmosphere without any tension. Everybody understood that we’re capable of victory only if we work as a team. We had a few programmes during our training that barely had anything to do with water polo. In the break we’re going to try clay pigeon shooting for instance. I’m sure it will be fun. These are the programmes that bring us closer. There’s thirteen of us, like a big family in those moments.” – said one of the most important players of the team.

„This little break’s going to be good for each of us, everybody can calm down and meet with their family, but not for so long as we have to train and prepare for our further matches. Canada’s playing a tough game just as the Netherlands, but they’re not that hard to beat. This is going to be a quarter final, anything may happen, especially in women’s water polo, but our ultimate goal is victory for sure.” – added Dóra Czigány, referring to their next challenge.

Of course head coach, Attila Bíró is already preparing for this challenge. He’s working out the tactics against the Canadians.

„We’re preparing for the next mini final. Firstly it was important not to continue with a game against Russia. Now the Dutch has this death match to play. We’re happy about our extra day, we can rest, prepare, the girls may take an extra chill too. I hope with similar tactics we may beat Canada, as well. They are phisically similar to the Dutch players, maybe they are better as they have two left handed players, just like Spain. We have to prepare for that. They surprised us in the Shanghai World League Super Final, it was a tie then. Now we have our way to defend against them.” – said the head coach of the team.
