4-person Mixed 5 km Team Relay according to new rules to debut at the 17th FINA World Championships. Teams will consist of four swimmers, two men and two women per team, each member has to swim 1250m. For this reason, the arrangement of the 2.5 km course will be modified, the two external buoys will be moved closer to the stands, so swimmers will race right in front of spectators during the whole race.

One nation can qualify one team only, teams are allowed to use tactics to their choice: the names and order for swimmers shall be submitted by the evening before the event.

Currently little is known about the composition of teams, it is assumed that each nation would qualify their most successful swimmers. For instance, the French team has two gold medallist swimmers already and it is likely that they will attend, as well. When exchanging relays one swimmer shall hold on to the platform and may start swimming only when fellow member touches the palm.
