The Dutch competitors have clinched both gold medals in the Olympic marathon swimming events! (Image: fina.org)

The Dutch competitors have clinched both gold medals in the Olympic marathon swimming events. One day after Sharon van Rouwendaal had won the women’s 10 km competition, Ferry Weertman finished first in the men’s event. Spiros Gianniotis of Greece came second and Marc-Antoine Olivier of France third.

„A dream has come true, it’s incredible, fantastic! I have been working for this for six years, and I have done it!” – Weertman said.

Márk Papp of Hungary finished on 13th place in his first Olympics.

„It has been a very tough race, the world’s best marathon swimmers have been competing. The 13th place of Mark is all right, maybe he could have finished further, if he had gathered pace a little earlier in the end. From now on we are focusing on the 2017 FINA World Championships in Hungary, where Márk will be even better and more experienced” – Péter Nagy, coach of Márk Papp said.
