Women’s water polo: potential surprise team, Canada had a common training with the Netherlands
The North-American team proved its strength in the World League Super Final with their new head coach, succesfully finishing the tournament as the runner-up. In Budapest, the Canadian ladies are eager to repeat this performance.
Two days before the first round of the Water Polo Championship almost every women’s team have tried the competition pool at the Hajós Alfréd Swimming Complex. For instance, Canada had a common training with the Netherlands.
Theocharis Pavlidis, the head coach of Canada, who managed Olympiakos Pireus for a long time, made a great debut on the bench as they reached the final of the World League Super Final in June (when the United States performed better than anybody expected).

Now in Budapest, the Canadians will start the tournament with a challenging game against the silver medallist of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Italy. This rendezvous will be the very first match of the whole water polo World Championships.
The mentioned silver medal of the Canadian team was a surprise for the canadian head coach too, but now he thinks that every rival team will be more concentrated against them.
„I think our preparation was good enough, of course it could be nice that if we had a little bit more time. But it was impossible. We are a young team, we need more time but I believe if we follow our system we can reach the quarterfinal in this event” – said Theocharis Pavlidis after the training session on Friday.
„Yes, our World League performance was a little surprise for me also because we trained together only two weeks before we traveled there. Now we are in a more difficult situation because other teams count on us to make another surprise. So the World Championships will be a very very big challange for us. Of course there are four-five teams in the top level, like USA, the Netherlands, Hungary, Utaly, Greece, Spain, they have the chance to win this tournament. But I think, in one game everything can happen. This World Chmapionships is a very balanced tournament” – addded Pavlidis.
Canada will face Italy on Sunday, 9:30am.
