International panorama of the protagonists of six disciplines at the 17th FINA World Championships in Budapest and Balatonfüred.

Swimming – 7 gold medals by Belmonte

Olympic champion of Rio in women’s 200 m butterfly, Mireia Belmonte Garcia participated in the national university swimming championships taking place in Murcia, Spain. She claimed seven gold medals, four in individual events (200 m butterfly, 200 and 400 m medley and 800 m freestyle) and three in relay events.

Open water swimming – Brazilian qualification

5 km events were organised on Saturday during the National Swimming Marathon held in Foz do Iguacu, Brazil, similarly to previous 10 km events the 91-member field swam for qualification for the open water tournament at the 17th FINA World Championships. Concerning men’s field the winner Allan do Carmo (54.27) and second placed Fernando Ponte (54.28), regarding women gold medallist Ana Marcela Cunha (57.47) and silver medallist Betina Lorscheitter (57.57) secured their places in the team travelling to Hungary in summer.

Swimming – here is the Chinese roster

The Chinese Swimming Federation has announced the names of those achieving qualification time for the 17th FINA World Championships and hence are included in the roster. It is interesting to note that the list of names does not contain defending champion of men’s 100 m freestyle, Ning Zetao. 24-year old sprinter was banned from the national team last autumn for repeated violations of rules (he refused to compete as first member of the relay, then he gave an interview without any permission and even criticised the leaders’ decision).

The 39-member team certainly features Olympic champion Sun Yang and Olympic medallist backstrokers Xu Jiayu and Fu Yuanhui as well.
