W9 Group B

United States-Spain 12-8 (6-1, 1-2, 2-2, 3-3)

Beatriz Munoz Ortiz (ESP):

„Well, this match was hard, we started off a bit weak, we could have been better. I hope in the next one we will be better and we can win.”

Miki Oca, head coach (ESP):

“We have not started very well and soon team United States was leading by five goals, so from then on we tried to get back in the game. The US team is a tough one to beat, in fact if we had started in a better way we could have had chances to win the match. Unfortunately, this time there was a big difference from the beginning. The next game against South Africa should keep us on track and help us to improve, mainly for the round of sixteen and quarter-final matches. Winning the championship is hard because some teams are very good, the US is the favourite, but we will do our best to make it to the top of the ranking.”

Adam Krikorian, head coach (USA):

“A coach is never satisfied. They scored a lot of goals and we did not play as good as we could have. First of all, it is hard to score a goal. Secondly, our opponentt, Spain is one of the best teams in the world. Honestly, our main concern is not the score but how we play. The question is whether we can do our best or not. I hope the girls will do better in the future.

Rachel Fattal (USA):

“I mean Spain is a very good team so playing with them is always hard and difficult, we came here for victory, so I am happy we won, it was a good game, they were very good and challenged us really. It was a good game.”

W10 Group B

New Zealand-South Africa 8-6 (2-1, 1-2, 1-1, 4-2)

Angela Winstanley-Smith, head coach (NZL):

„It was a really stressful game. We had a lots of opportunities in the first quarter to go ahead. A 100% well done to South Africa. They brought their game. They prepared for this game and they gave us a real challenge and I think that’s what the world championship is about. There are close games. I think the spirit of the game was nice. I’m really proud.”

Samuel Gareth, head coach (RSA):

„We would have liked to win but otherwise I am generally OK. I think that New Zealand deserved to win the game, they fought hard and were probably better than us today. We play Spain, next game in our pool and they are a really good team so we will try to get into the game and see what happens but I do not see a real opportunity to be in the semifinals of the tournament so we have to recognise their quality and stick one, make the game and then we will see what happens.”

Kelsey White (RSA):

„I feel disappointed because it was the closest match we’ve ever played against the kiwis, the New Zealand girls. It was the closest that we ever got with this team, so i was disappointed, but also it was a huge improvement from us, but if we wouldn’t have let that win away, that would have been great. So it’s such a huge disappointment. So now we play with Spain the day after tommorrow who we see as the best, top top professional team, so we will just keep getting better from here on, and try to get the good things away from that game.”

W12 Group C

Japan-Netherlands 8-20 (0-7, 5-3, 2-5, 1-5)

Hideo Katho, head coach (JPN):

„We were done in the first period. We were not very focused, especially at first. To have a chance to win we have to stay competitive, we do need to concentrate more. That is our goal for the next game.”

Arno Havenga, head coach (NED):

„We finished really well the first period, and then we lost a bit our concentration, but the last half of the game we controlled it a bit better again, also our concentration level. We finished this game with a good feeling. The next one against Hungary is the most important game, to finish as the first or second in the group would be cool to get to the finals, so now this is the next step we have to prepare.”

Laura Aarts (NED):

„It was a tough game because we made it tough. We had to go for a big score because of Hungary, and we did, so a French lead was good, we ended well, but we could do better, of course. Next game is against Hungary, our last pool game, so our expectation is that we have to win and hopefully we are gonna win so we get first in the pool. That is the best for us.”

W13 Group D

Greece-Kazakhstan 19-5 (5-0, 4-2, 4-1, 6-2)

Xenaki Eleni (GRE):

„I feel very happy with this result. We wanted to win against Kazashtan, what is a very experienced team in this type of playing. The next match is against Australia, and we want a big win again, so we could continue with the championship.”

Azhar Alibayeva (KZH):

„We made too many mistakes. In the next match we have to win. I really enjoy staying in Budapest. It’s nice and pretty here.

W14 Group D

Australia-Russia 8-5 (1-2, 2-1, 3-1, 2-1)

Isobel Bishop (AUS)

„I think we are in a pretty good position, it’s good to have the team together. We have a new coach and a new program, it’s a really good start of the tournament. The match against Greece should be interesting as our coach is Greek. I love Budapest, we actually came here last year and we had a few days off and the city is really nice.”

Alexander Gaidukov, head coach (RUS)

„We did not deserve to win because we made too many mistakes, it’s a pity. Our team is really young, this day just wasn’t ours. I think we will win against Kazakhstan and have everything under control.”

Evgeniya Ivanova (RUS)

„We will keep on playing. We will correct our mistakes and we will win the next game.”

W15 Group A

China-Canada 8-9 (1-1, 4-2, 0-5, 3-1)

Dali Gong, head coach (CHN):

„We lost the game and this is very stressful but we are happy, because our players improved a lot in these days. In Shanghaj we lost with ten goals but here with only one.”

Guannan Niu (CHN):

„Everyone played good today and it was very hard against Canada. They have a new coach and new tactics also. We have a young team so we are satisfaid with our play.”

Haris Pavlidis, head coach (CAN):

„We started a bit shaky, not quite where we wanted to go the first half. The defense was okay, in the second half we stepped up the game, it went really well in the third quarter, where we did some things we should have done in the first half. We lost a bit of some calls in the backfield in the last quarter, which cost us a lot, but we managed to score in the last second.  The next match that we’re having against Brazil is important for us, we are gonna have to play strong and make sure to win that game.”

Kyra Christmas (CAN):

„We started off solidly, skipping the ball at some points but basicaly, it went okay. China played a great game, but it came as a surprise that it was a close game. Now, we’re gonna regroup, and prepare for the next game.”

W11 Group C

France-Hungary 5-24 (0-7, 2-7, 3-6, 0-4)

Attila Bíró, head coach (HUN):

“We did not think about the goal difference, our aim was to score more goals and get less goals than two days before against Japan. We wanted to play a good game, to enjoy the feeling. I’m happy about my player’s concentration. In the next game we must play for the winning against Netherlands. Our goal is to win the group.”

Barbara Bujka (HUN):

“We wanted to increase our self-confidence and I think we were successful. We played with ease, and we did what we had talked about. This performance was much better than against Japan. About Netherlands? That game will be a big match with scratching, fighting, but that is high level. I can’t wait for that meeting.”

Florian Bruzzo, head coach (FRA):

„This Hungarian team is wonderful. Their goalie, their defenders, their attackers, all great players. We are not on the same level as they are, we just started buildng our team. Our girls don’t have much experience, but they fought in front of a big crowd and that’s really important. They did everything I asked. To play here in the home of water polo is amazing.”

Estelle Millot (FRA):

„I’m happy that I scored twice, but this was a team effort. It’s not easy againts Hungary, especially at home, we are not accustomed to this atmosphere in France. We are lucky that we can be a part of these awesome moments and we try to cherish all of them. We lost by a lot, but we did all we could.”

Italy – Brazil 18-4 (5-1, 6-1, 4-1, 3-1)

Valeria Palmieri (ITA)

„We were able to break the ice. The most important thing wasn’t my role but that we won the game. We play against China the day after tomorrow and we would like to stay in this form for that game as well.”

Victoria Chamarro (BRA)

„It was hard to play againts a team like Italy, so we tried to keep it relaxed and play slowly. We focused on the defense, and stayed calm at the attack. We are a young team, so that played a big role, too. We came here to give our best and make the best out of it, though.”

Eduardo Abla, head coach (BRA)

„Overall, I’m happy with the result. They are all very young, so I think that they did a good job. We have an organized attack-program, which we didn’t manage to do, considering the fact that we played against an experienced team like the Italian one. They did exactly what I asked them to, so I’m proud.”
