Time for the World Masters Championships – Find accommodation with Trivago
The first World Masters Championships were organised almost 30 years ago, in 1986 and has since become the biggest FINA event in terms of participant numbers. This is no surprise as the number of registered senior professional swimmers amounts to 60,000 worldwide. Usually 10,000 athletes will travel to any city in the world where a world championship is being held. And this is only the number of swimmers. The other four disciplines only increase this impressive number, usually topping at 12,000 competing participants. (12,410 in Riccione, 2012, more than 10,000 two years later in Montreal, representing 97 countries, on all time highest number).
In 2017 the expected numbers at the World Championships could easily be 20-22,000. The athletes are usually accompanied by at least one, but often two members of friends and family. The World Masters Championships have truly become a huge celebratory event that not only shows the amazing endurance of these serious athletes and strives to promote sport as a lifestyle, but is also an event of tourism.
